“I knew that I had an addictive personality when I was 7 and had a chicken salad sandwich everyday for an entire school year”
When you travel a lot, it’s imperative to have some type of hobby. Preferably, a portable hobby. (Watching TV and sleeping are not great hobbies) A few months ago I saw an ad for a local bead show. And let’s be honest, what woman over 40 doesn’t love a good craft show? So I grabbed a friend and headed on down to the local fairgrounds, paid my entrance fee and discovered the amazing world of beads and bead crafts!!! You have no idea how I felt! It was like, Prom, Neverland and the wedding I never had, all rolled into one!! It was a super Michael’s store on steroids!
I went in on a Friday with about $180 in my pocket. I left tired and broke, kinda like a budding drug addict. We left to go grab some food, more money (I had vowed to only use cash) and my friend’s daughter. We returned a few hours later and continued to make it rain! This was one of those times when I wished I was a rapper with one of those guns that fires money.

Confession: We went back twice on Saturday and again on Sunday. After it was all said and done, I’d spent about $800 in cash and the AMEX had made an appearance or two. When the weekend was over, I organized all of my beads and set about learning how to make beaded necklaces. What did we do before YouTube?
I now have a large tub filled with many of my creations. My craft has gone through three distinct stages, kinda crappy beginner necklaces, super colorful seed beads, and now I have fully embraced the O.L.P. stage!! I have started making some trendy pieces, tassels and matte beads are the latest thing, but my heart belongs to round, smooth, shiny, natural stone or glass beads. In an effort to recoup some of the small fortune that I’ve spent on my little beauties, I am now selling my necklaces. I should have an Etsy page set up just as soon as I have two seconds to rub together.
Well that’s enough for today! See you kids again in a day or two. Have a lovely day!
